Oxfam's International Person of the Year awarded to Lakes volunteer

An Ambleside volunteer has been declared as Oxfam's International Person of the Year.

Barrie Wendt received the accolade not only for his work at the Ambleside branch, at which he has volunteered for over 22 years, ever since retiring. But also for the business retailing systems he has developed and introduced nationally, which keeps over 700 Oxfam shops in the UK running smoothly.

Annually Oxfam receives £30m from its 700 UK shops, including £50,000 from the Ambleside store. Many of the shops 30 volunteers gathered to celebrate Mr Wendt's award.

In a framed citation, Oxfam’s Chief Executive, Dame Barbara Stocking, praised Mr Wendt’s dedication, expertise and willingness to train and support Oxfam shop managers and volunteers, which she said had made an incalculable contribution to the charity’s trading division.
