February 10th - 15th 2013
If your Scrabble board only appears at Christmas and holiday times, come along and see why so many people are utterly addicted to this game. You may play regularly at a club and like to improve your game and pick up some handy tips in the process, or you may simply want to start winning those Christmas family Scrabble games! Whatever your aspirations this is the holiday for you.
A knowledge of the game is needed but the Scrabble basics will be covered. The course will show you some techniques and strategy for greatly improving your Scrabble game and you will be given hints and tips on various aspects of the game. There will be plenty of games, both social and competitive, to put into practice what has been learned. There will be optional tutorials on various aspects of the game after the main morning competition. Handouts will be given on the topics covered along with some puzzles to try.
There will be three competitions during the week, two of which are optional. The main competition will be a series of one-to-one games against your fellow guests, based on a 'Swiss-paired' movement. The late afternoon session will be a separate competition (optional), and the late evening sessions will be a knock-out competition, again optional. In addition games other than Scrabble can be played in the afternoon and late evening sessions.
The holiday is very suitable for anyone on their own, with communal dining and friendly leaders. There will also be plenty of time each day to explore the lovely Lake District, with an longer period on the Wednesday.
The holiday runs from Sunday afternoon through to Friday morning and prices are per person for the 5 nights and include full Cumbrian breakfast, morning coffee, light afternoon tea, 3-course dinner and VAT @ 20 % .
Non-playing partners are welcome, and there is a reduction of £30 on the above prices for them.
A deposit of £150 per person is required for the holidays, which can be made by cheque or credit card. This is non-refundable unless the room is subsequently re let - cancellation insurance is available.
Kathy Rush has been playing Scrabble for many years at home, her local club and competitively. She has been a member of the Postal Scrabble club both as a player and in various committee roles.
Together with her husband Dave she has been organising Scrabble breaks both in this country and abroad. Since taking early retirement from his job Dave has helped develop the tutoring side of Scrabble. Their friendly, informal approach makes for a relaxed atmosphere.
They both love gardening and their other main interest is playing bridge. They take great pleasure in meeting old, and making new, friends on Scrabble breaks and holidays.
