WALKING HOLIDAYS

Our thirteenth year of walking holidays will again offer a variety of fantastic routes, some well-known and some more off the beaten track.

Their popularity has grown over the years, possibly due to the following:

1. The linear routes planned offer much of interest, often starting in one valley and finishing in a completely different one, thus avoiding having to return to the starting point.

2. These holidays are very suitable for persons on their own, with a good and friendly group of fellow walkers.

3. Comfortable transport, good places for lunch and the planning and checking of the routes - everything is organised to ensure an enjoyable carefree time.

4. Most mornings and afternoons have an alternative of an easier or more energetic route. This arrangement seems to suit many, especially couples where one partner is a stronger walker than the other.

The programme starts on Sunday afternoon with a short introductory walk followed by four full days of walking, covering between 7 and 10 miles each day, but the general pace will be a relaxed one to allow time for stops of interest - scenic, architectural, local history, Lakeland traditions, flora etc.
Some routes will involve more difficult terrain and a certain speed of travel. Ultimately it is the leader’s decision as to which members can attempt them; personal and group safety being always paramount.

A typical day would begin either from Rothay Manor, or after travelling by small coach to the start, walking for up to three hours with a stop for coffee before lunch in a local hostelry or café, often with a real fire!
Prior to dinner each evening there is a meeting in the Brathay Room to reflect on the day’s walking and outline plans for the following day.
