ROTHAY  MANOR  REVIEW               WINTER 2007

Another busy year comes to an end, and while the summer wasn’t what you could call ‘great’ by any stretch of the imagination, it certainly didn’t stop people coming to the Lake District.

We think it has probably been the busiest year for quite some time  - especially September and October as some of you who tried to come and see us then will know!

AWARDS 2008

As most of you will remember, in the Spring Newsletter Julia had been short-listed for the Cumbria Tourism Most Outstanding Customer Service Award. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to you all that she was selected to go forward to represent Cumbria in the same category in the ‘North West for Excellence Awards’. So, on 10th October Julia and Anne-Marie donned their

posh frocks’ and attended a glitzy Awards Ceremony at Manchester Central. The award went to the Lady Lever Art Gallery, Port Sunlight but it was stressed that all of those representing their individual counties were ‘winners’ already.

The Most Outstanding Customer Service Award is, I’m told, the most hotly contested category and always receives the most entries (over 200 for Cumbria alone this year!).

I’m sure you will join me in congratulating Julia on her achievement which I’m sure you will agree is well-deserved.

This year, for the first time, we were short-listed for the ‘Small Hotel of the Year’ Award in the 2007 Lake District and Lancashire Life Awards, along with the Castle Green Hotel Kendal, and the Gilpin Lodge Bowness-on-Windermere.

The hotel garden again won the ‘Bob Long’ Trophy for hotels with 10 or more bedrooms in this year’s Ambleside In Bloom competition.

STAFF MATTERS

You will have seen some new faces around the hotel this year. Janice (reception), Eliane (reception and dining room) and Christine (Head Housekeeper) have all joined us during 2007.

Janice (top left) has joined the reception team to help Julia and give

Anne-Marie more time to concentrate on the Marketing and

administration side. This is Janice’s first experience of hotel work and she is constantly surprised at the varied challenges each day brings!

Eliane (middle left) is from the south of France and normally returns there for the winter; however, this year she has decided to stay and sample the delights of a Lake District winter (brave girl!). She has worked in hotels in France and

England as well as in retail.

Christine ( bottom right) joined us as Head Housekeeper earlier this year and has enjoyed the challenge of keeping our standards high. She has worked in a number of hotels in

the area, went in to buy a car and came out with an application form (well almost!). Funny old world isn’t it?

We hope they all have a long and happy association with Rothay Manor.

Many of you will know that Jane is always very successful at the annual Ambleside Flower and Craft Show with her garden containers and plants. This year was no exception although she did have some competition – Anne-Marie entered a few containers for the first time and came away with: the Holmes of Natland ‘Best in Show’ shield, the Blue Ribbon Award for the Best Horticultural Exhibit in the Show and the Presidents Trophy for her ‘glorious’ sunshine yellow begonias. Jane has declared war!

Special Interest Holidays

The Special Interest Holidays in the first half of the 2007-2008 season were really so busy we had a waiting list for places.

The second half of the season is already looking busy, and with a completely new interest – Scrabble – coming up in April, there are even more subjects to choose from. The Music Holiday in February is now full but there are still places available on some of the others – but don’t leave it too long to book if youwant to come!

Some sad news this year about two people connected with the Special Interest Holidays. Marian Waters who was the tutor for the very first Music Holiday in 1988, and continued until 1999, sadly passed away early in 2007. The death of Margaret Francis, Ivor’s wife, who many of you will know from the Bridge Holidays, came as a great shock to everyone. Our sympathy goes out to both families. Meanwhile we look forward to seeing Ivor again in the Spring.

As usual we provide individual leaflets for each subject - if you would like a specific one, you can download a copy by clicking on the link www.rothaymanor.co.uk/special or we will send it to you by post.

Gift Letter Service

It’s a common problem -  “What can I get to say ‘Thank You?”    “It’s Mum’s birthday soon, I really don’t know what to give her!    Why not use our popular Gift Letter Service ideal for any occasion.  Choose from Lunch,  Dinner,  Afternoon Tea,  Accommodation or simply a voucher - in fact, whatever you need, we can offer a personalised Gift Letter to suit you.

Payment can be accepted by Credit Card over the telephone.

Just give us a call on 015394 33605 or e-mail us at: hotel@rothaymanor.co.uk

Website

The website is still ‘evolving’ with even more brochures available for you to download including details of our wheelchair accessible rooms, Family Holidays, Bridge Holidays, the new Scrabble Holiday or any of the leaflets relating to the Special Interest Holidays. You can now find details of forthcoming local events there, as well as the names and contact details of our food suppliers etc.

We are hoping to have the option of online booking on the site in the near future too so look out for that and don’t forget to keep an eye on the Special Offer page.
