Interior Design Holiday
April 18th - 23rd 2010
PROGRAMME
Rothay Manor is delighted to introduce 'Interior Design and Historic Period Style' as a new addition to their range of Special Interest holidays. Designed for people with an interest in contemporary and historical interior design, the emphasis is on a pleasant and relaxing break in the company of fellow enthusiasts, rather than formal teaching. Groups are limited to 16 to ensure personal attention, and are well suited to anyone on their own.
Glass, furniture and textiles will be the main theme throughout the holiday. During the holiday you will be shown some of the main 'period' characteristics and taught some interior design techniques – such as the use of colour, materials and shapes - and how to apply these techniques to your own surroundings. Armed with this knowledge you will be encouraged to appreciate and view splendid examples by visiting local relevant sites of interest to enable you to witness these styles.
Dalemain House
This much-loved family home is set against the grandeur and splendour of the Lakeland Fells and the surrounding parkland. Behind the impressive pink façade lies the real surprise of Dalemain - its sheer variety. The history of the house stretches from Saxon times to early Georgian and has been in the same family since 1679. The property offers an opportunity to view the combination of various period styles and witness how the appropriate selection of materials, bold colours and scale collude to create a family home from this mansion.
Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club
A half-day visit to this wonderful example of renowned Arts & Crafts Architect C. F. A. Voysey's work, followed by afternoon tea. The property has formal gardens that run down to Lake Windermere and was also featured in the film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’.
Voysey was a prolific architect and designer and the interior here is a testament to his Interior Design abilities. You will be able to see wallpaper, textiles and finishes designed by Voysey himself in the formal areas of the property.
Stained Glass
Glass is an important and under used material in most homes, and we will discuss how to apply glass to enhance our interiors during the week.
To support this theme we will be visiting a stained glass workshop in Kendal.
Northern Lights specialises in restoration work and glass painting techniques. We will view a
range of stained glass work and have the opportunity to discuss the various techniques and applications for this ancient craft.
Sizergh Castle
Creating a home in a modest domestic property is daunting enough for most people. Here at Sizergh we will be looking at how a Castle can be decorated to provide a comfortable home. This beautiful medieval house was extended in Elizabethan times, and is surrounded by rich gardens and has been home to the Strickland family for more than 750 years.
The Drawing room is a wonderful example of how to cross the 'time' barriers. It contains a collection of glass, late 18th century English china and pottery and is presented with a colour scheme that is still widely used in today’s interiors. We will gain further inspiration when we view a series of oak-panelled rooms and an inlaid chamber.

The Tutor
Christine Hamilton’s career has involved her in product design as well as both commercial and domestic interior design commissions. Her love of colour and well planned interior spaces with clearly defined living zones have developed over an Interior Design career spanning 25 years. She is a qualified lecturer and has lectured extensively in her chosen field of Interior Design. Christine has written for her local newspapers, contributed to 'Décor' a trade publication and been a guest speaker on radio Cleveland.
"There is no style so coveted in interior design as authentic period style, immerse yourself in centuries of social and architectural delights." (Source unknown)
