‘Music from Northern Lands ’
November 28th - December 3rd 2010
Following the success of our 2009 course on Czech music, in 2010 we move north to explore the music of the Scandinavian countries close to the Arctic Circle. Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland have produced many fine composers over the last one hundred and fifty years or so. If we include Estonia, on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea as a near neighbour, we have yet more composers to add to those who have made a significant contribution to music in these cold northern lands.
This holiday course will explore some of this rich legacy. Although the names of some Scandinavian composers are well-known to us through several popular works – Grieg from Norway, and Sibelius from Finland are the obvious examples – the music of their lesser-known contemporaries gets little exposure in 21st century UK.
During the holiday, we shall examine some lesser-known chamber, orchestral and vocal music by Grieg and Sibelius and their contemporaries, and look at the exciting works produced by Carl Nielson in Denmark; but we shall also move nearer to our own time as we explore the interesting music coming out of Estonia. There will also be some surprises as we extend our knowledge of music from these northern lands.
As always, the holiday will culminate in a chamber music recital by students from the Royal Northern College of Music.
