Rothay Manor Focus: Walking Holiday

We have recently been given the itinerary from our walking guides Anne Strange and Pip Line for our walking holiday in the Autumn, and it has inspired me to get out on some jaunts.

I’ve been living in Ambleside for over 2 years, and there are still walks that I haven’t discovered, and walks that I am desperate to do again.

One such walk on the schedule for the Autumn walking holiday is from Howtown to Glenridding.  The start is at Glenridding, where one boards the steamer to Howtown and then walks the lakeside path back to Glenridding.  Last Sunday seemed like an ideal opportunity to take this amble.  The weather was a little thundery, with rain showers, but as the route was well-marked we thought we should give it a go.  It is no surprise that Wainwright thought this “the finest lakeside walk in the Lake District”, it was simply stunning!

There were views like this throughout the walk, a stunning steamer journey at the start, and a pub stop at the end…I’m not sure what else you could possibly need!

I hope to have time to take on the other walks that are planned – the walk from Windermere via Orrest Head and Troutbeck to Ambleside is high on my list, I do love a linea walk!  I last did this a number of years ago, when the weather was frightful, and it was still a beautiful walk.

Another perennial favourite is Helm Crag, or the Lion & The Lamb as it is affectionately known.  I normally take on this walk with new visitors to the area, as it’s a good example of a Lakeland fell, but isn’t going to kill anyone!  The start is relatively steep, but short-lived and the views are quite exceptional.  I like to follow the route as in our walking holiday, over Gibson Knott, and returning via Grasmere Common.

Our walking holidays provide a good opportunity to discover some great spots in the Lake District, with the security of knowing that you don’t need to read a map!  Our guides are knowledgeable, not just in the local area, but also the local flora and fauna, so you will discover things about the Lake District that you may not have known.  Couple that with meeting like-minded people, and some fabulous food back at the Manor, and this ticks all of the boxes for a perfect holiday!

Our next walking holiday is on the 21st October 2018.  Get in touch at [email protected] or 015394 33605 for more information and to book
